Statement from éirígí Condemning Italian Fascist Misuse of Irish Republican Cause

éirígí notes with deep concern the use of Irish republican imagery by fascist, far-right groups in Italy. We call upon these groups to desist from their attempts to appropriate the memory of Irish republican martyrs in pursuit of their vision of a society based upon prejudice, discrimination and exclusion.

éirígí, as a socialist republican party, views the use of this imagery by fascist groups as an insult to the integrity of the Irish struggle for freedom and justice - the simple fact is that both of these concepts are fundamentally at odds with the reactionary views that fascism is based upon; éirígí unequivocally condemns both the use of Bobby Sands’ image, and that of other Hunger Strikers, as well as pathetic efforts by fascist Italian groups to gain credibility by attempting to latch on to the recent campaign to free the republican prisoner Brendan Lillis. Many of those republicans whose image and memory is being cynically used by these fascist groups regarded themselves as socialist republicans, and as such, the very nature of these groups would be anathema to these martyred freedom fighters. The proud Irish tradition of internationalist solidarity and cooperation in the struggle against injustice in its various manifestations down through the years has of course included direct republican involvement in resistance to fascism - those who gave their lives fighting for the Republican cause during the Spanish Civil War stand out as a stirring example and enduring inspiration to this very day of the Irish contribution to the anti-fascist struggle. The 75th Anniversary of the Spanish Civil War was marked by an event held in Dublin on 15 July, hosted by éirígí, commemorating those Irish volunteers who joined the International Brigades.

éirígí is opposed to all forms of racism, bigotry, discrimination and intolerance and will continue to challenge and face down racist and far right tendencies, wherever we find them. We will continue to work with other progressive groups such as AFA Ireland (Anti Fascist Action) in exposing and challenging fascism in Ireland.

Finally, éirígí would like to thank PCL (Partito Comunista dei Lavoratori Sez.Firenze) for bringing this matter to our attention and we would like to extend our solidarity and support to the PCL in opposing fascism.
